Grump Central Archive: Week of 10 December 2017

Saturday, 16 December 2017

This morning I was greeted by a red-bellied woodpecker enjoying peanuts for breakfast. Yesterday's snow brought us another two inches, which should depart soon as forecasts call for a gradual warming trend. I've just returned from the camper, where a small space heater set on low is maintaining a nice comfy 50 degrees for my kids. Life, for them at least, is good.

Our second whitening event of the season is fading, but forecasts call for up to three inches of snow beginning this afternoon. We haven't made it above freezing for the last three days, so the ground could potentially freeze this year (it never froze last year). So, even if by some chance the property contract settlement ends favorably, I might not be able to do anything on the house until spring.

We're white again, after about an inch fell last night, while the deep cold persists. At least my kids are nice and toasty now, since I picked up two 100-foot extension cords and a small space heater yesterday; I also installed a remote temperature sensor so I can monitor their comfort from the cabin. I'm much relieved. But the radio silence continues, creating a perpetual tightness in my chest.

Wednesday, 13 December 2017

The cold snap arrived earlier than predicted—it dropped down to 18 last night, and it's not supposed to break 30 today. And the cold is predicted to stick around for a week. God, I hate the cold. I'm going to have to go shopping today for bird food and an extension cord so I can run a space heater for my poor chilly kids. In other news, I just realized that, because one of the lawyers in my property case is Jewish, Hanukkah will punch a big hole in the time remaining until the year-end deadline: they'll have only about a week to come up with an answer. Things are not looking good.

Tuesday, 12 December 2017

Between light drizzle and an expected high near 50, the snow is quickly disappearing. But then we're supposed to get tossed in the deep freeze, with lows in the teens for a few nights starting tomorrow. I'm going to have to set up a space heater for my kids. Meanwhile, the continued radio silence has my stress level reaching new highs.

Monday, 11 December 2017

Thankfully it didn't get as cold as predicted last night, but we did get a light dusting of snow. Today begins the first of three weeks remaining for the property buyers to resolve our impasse, and since the last one is a holiday week, they really only have two left. Given the glacial pace at which lawyers usually operate, they're already out of time. So it seems I may be as well.

Sunday, 10 December 2017

We got about three inches of snow last night, but now it's pushing 40 and the sun is melting it pretty quickly. The birds are really happy there's a bunch of feeders for them at the cabin. Tonight it's supposed to hit the mid-20s. I hate the cold.
